In a significant development towards decarbonizing of the aviation sector, the country's first commercial passenger flight using indigenously produced Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) blend was successfully flown on 19 May 2023
Air Asia flight flew from Pune to Delhi powered by SAF blended aviation turbine fuel supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Limited in partnership with a private firm.
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri received the special flight at New Delhi airport.
Terming it a significant milestone in the country's efforts towards Net Zero emissions by 2070, Mr. Puri said, SAF production technology has progressed significantly in recent years.
He said, unlike traditional jet fuels, SAF is produced from renewable sources such as agricultural waste, municipal solid waste, and forestry residues.
He added that SAF has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel.
